Atomize would be a strong addition to a Golgari midrange or control deck in Magic: the Gathering, as it provides versatile removal for nonland permanents while also enabling additional counters through proliferate. However, the card could potentially be overshadowed by more efficient removal options like Assassin's Trophy or Abrupt Decay in competitive play, as they offer broader removal capabilities at a similar mana cost. Nonetheless, Atomize could still see play in certain metagames where proliferate synergies are valuable or where the ability to destroy any nonland permanent is crucial.
