A deck that focuses on tribal strategies, such as Merfolk, Elves, or Goblins, would benefit from using Plague Engineer to weaken opposing creature-based strategies. While Plague Engineer is a solid choice for its ability to shrink enemy creatures, some may argue that cards like Engineered Plague or Night of Souls' Betrayal offer similar effects with potentially broader reach. However, Plague Engineer can still be a valuable inclusion in sideboards for decks looking to disrupt specific creature types in the current metagame.
