While there may be better equipment cards available, such as Sword of Fire and Ice or Sword of Feast and Famine, Mage Slayer could still see play in specific metagames where its ability to bypass blockers and deal direct damage is particularly effective.

This ability triggers and resolves in the declare attackers step. The creature will still deal its combat damage as normal later on during the combat phase.
