Agonizing Syphon could be beneficial in a Black control deck that focuses on gaining life and dealing direct damage to control the board. However, there are better options like Lightning Helix which deals 3 damage to any target and you gain 3 life for just 1RW, making it more mana-efficient and versatile. Agonizing Syphon may not see much play in competitive decks due to its higher cost and less efficient effect compared to other similar cards.
