This card could benefit a graveyard-focused deck that aims to fill the graveyard with creature cards for discarding to pump up Erstwhile Trooper. However, there are better cards that offer similar effects more efficiently, such as Tarmogoyf or Death's Shadow, which see more play in competitive Magic: the Gathering decks due to their stronger impact on the game. Erstwhile Trooper may struggle to find a place in top-tier decks but could still be a fun and flavorful addition to more casual or thematic decks.
